FRENCH Minister of Environment S`egole`ne Royal says the alternative source of energy (charcoal) that most Zambians have turned to due to increased load shedding is causing deforestation in the country. The French Minister said over reliance on charcoal as an alternative energy source may lead to deforestation which would in turn ultimately lead to climate change.

The high levels of deforestation in the country have become a matter of concern to Environmentalists. Environment Africa Assistant Field Officer InongeLubasi said in an interview with the Lusaka Starthat the main cause of deforestation in Zambia is poverty. Ms. Lubasi explained that people depend on the environment to sustain themselves by doing activities such as charcoal production and unsustainable agricultural methods like Chitemenesystem.

University of Zambia United Nations Youth Association (UNZA YUNA) has launched a tree planting campaign at the Great East Road Main Campus. The campaign is aimed at achieving Millennium Development Goal (MDG) number seven which aims to ensure environmental sustainability by 2015. In an interview with the Lusaka Star, UNZA YUNA President Shikaaba Pastop said the tree planting campaign was vital as trees were an important aspect in the eco-system.
