UNZA Sports Council to consider physically challenged in sports

THE University of Zambia (UNZA) sports council has disclosed plans of considering physically challenged people in sporting activities on campus. THE University of Zambia (UNZA) Sports Council has disclosed plans of considering physically challenged people in sporting activities on campus.

Currently at UNZA, the physically challenged people do not have sporting events such as basketball, table tennis, and athletics.

And in an interview with the Lusaka star, University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) sports secretary Nasho Banda said the physically challenged people on campus had been neglected for many years with no sporting activities for them.

“No tournament has ever been organized to cater for these people and most of them used to take part in sporting activities at various schools they had come from and wish to continue even here,” he said.

“We as a union have heard their complaint and we are doing all we can to make sure activities are put in place that will involve the physically challenged,” Banda added.

The sports secretary further said the union would make segments for the handicapped students from different schools at the institution to organise competitions.

“We will even form an UNZA sports team for the handicapped and then award these students in the end. They have to make use of the sports and recreation fee they pay,” he added.

Meanwhile, UNZA spokesperson for the handicapped students, Lukonde Chamoto said handicapped students at the institution should not be discriminated against.

He added that the physically challenged people should be given equal opportunities as the able-bodied.

“Physically challenged people like any other student on campus must also be considered in sports activities because they equally need to be physically fit,” he said.

Chamoto has welcomed UNZASU’s plans to support the physically challenged at the institution.
