Ministyry of Transport Launch ZCILT

Zambia Charter of Logistics and Transport president Phidelia Mwaba says ZCILT is aimed at regulating professionalism amongst all organizations and individuals that are engaged in transport and logistic activities. THE Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communication has launched the Zambia Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (ZCILT).

Zambia Charter of Logistics and Transport president Phidelia Mwaba explained that the act is aimed at regulating professionalism amongst all organizations and individuals that are engaged in transport and logistic activities.

Speaking during the launch yesterday, Mrs. Mwaba said the act will promote the country’s transportation industry despite it being specialised.

“Despite being highly specialized, the transportation industry has operated without official recognition by law which negatively impacted the manner in which logistics and transport systems are managed and data is presented,” she said.

The president added that it is a statutory body whose provisions shall include registration and licensing of members to practice as logisticians and transportants.

“The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport has existed since 1959, firstly operating as the Chartered Institute of Transport (CIT), in 1989 the Zambia council registered with the Registrar of Societies and in 2004 the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport – Zambia council was formed.

“The institute is an examining body for courses in logistics and transport that lead to students qualifying as professionals and obtaining such certification”, the president explained.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Transport permanent secretary Mbolowa Muyaba said the act will also protect public interest by ensuring that only qualified individuals and registered logistics firms operate in Zambia through registration with the logisticians and transportants registration board which she said is the ZCILT registration board.

Ms. Muyaba further disclosed that the act provides for a fine, imprisonment for a term of up to two years or both for failure to comply with the provisions of the act.

“My ministry fully supports the ZCILT Act and I have no doubt in my mind that ZCILT will live up to its expectations in terms of exercising its mandate,” she said.
