‘Silent wives,’ a mouth piece for married women

“If you allow someone to abuse you, you will lose yourself and you will start to live for somebody else, hence you become their puppet,’’ says Zambia’s UK based novelist. A Zambian novelist based in the United Kingdom has stormed the world of literature with her third captivating novel titled ‘Silent Wives’.

In an interview with the Lusaka star, 27 year old Chisanshi Malama says ‘Silent wives’ is her way of sending a message to the women and men of Zambia.

Malama who is an undergraduate law student from De-montfort University notes in her book.

“Silent wives explores what makes a woman become silent during marriage when the husband becomes abusive. A woman needs to find a man that will nurture her, instead of suppressing her individuality.’’

She explains that she chose gender based violence as the theme of her novel adding that it is about time people started changing their mindset towards violence against women.

“If you allow someone to abuse you, you will lose yourself and you will start to live for somebody else, hence you become their puppet,’’ Malama explains.

The novelist believes that by using her talent, she would be able to help vulnerable people in society especially the women.

“I post chapters of my novels on Facebook, people love entertainment and the easiest way to get people back into reading and hooking them onto a book should be done through a medium they understand and use frequently,” she adds.

Malama says that she writes short novels because she understands the fact that people are usually busy but still want to read.

Chisanshi Malama’s novel Silent Wives was launched on 2nd February, 2014 at Mulungushi conference centre and can be found at major book stores around the country.
